At
sea with USNS Spica, Feb. 24, 2002
Eurocopter AS 330
Puma helicopters lift cargo from the combat stores ship USNS Spica
(T-AFS 9) for shipboard delivery. Spica, operated by the Military Sealift
Command (MSC), is resupplying USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) and
accompanying ships in the Mediterranean Sea. The ability to resupply and refuel
ships while underway allows the U.S. Navy to be where needed, when needed, and
for as long as needed. The John F. Kennedy battle group is expected to
relieve USS Theodore Roosevelt and her battle group to support
Operation Enduring Freedom. U.S. Navy photo by Photographer's Mate 1st Class

At
sea with USNS Spica, Mar. 27, 2002
The combat stores ship USNS Spica (T-AFS 9) steams about 150 feet off the
starboard side of USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) during a replenishment at sea. In
addition to supplies which are being highlined across from one ship to the
other, Spica is outfitted with contracted French-made SA-330 Puma helicopters
which also transfer cargo in what is known as a vertical replenishment or "vertrep."
The blue and gold bands on Spica's stack identify her as a "United States Naval
Ship" (USNS), crewed by Department of the Navy civilians with a Master in
charge. John C. Stennis and its battle group, of which Spica is part, are
supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. U.S. Navy photo by Photographer's Mate
